Recommended for: All public safety personnel serving as first responders who want to become a department trainer capable of instructing their department members’ in surface swiftwater rescues or flooding situations. The Swiftwater Rescue Specialist (basic or SWRI) and Dive Rescue International’s advanced Swiftwater Rescue Technician (SWRII) certifications are required.

Overview
Successful completion of the Swiftwater Rescue Trainer (SWRT) program provides the instructor with the skills required to certify their members as Swiftwater Rescue Specialists (as well as Swiftwater Rescue Shore Support Tenders) at both a basic (SWRI) and advanced level (SWRII). Instructors will be able to equip their students to respond to one of the most high-risk environments: swiftwater and flood response. The course includes a SWRII program overview, site preparation for swiftwater course operations, site survey hazard identification, personal protective equipment, in addition to practicing proven river rescue exercises. Obtaining the SWRT certification allows the instructor to teach the Swiftwater Rescue Specialist program in-house and to mutual aid departments.

Prerequisites:
- Sponsorship by a public safety agency
- 21 years of age
- Graduate of a basic Swiftwater rescue program
- Swiftwater II certification from Dive Rescue International within 3 years of initial Swiftwater certification.
- Current First Aid, EMT or Paramedic certification
- Current CPR certification
Notice To Applicants
This program is designed for personnel who are physically fit. Participants are encouraged to participate after successfully completing the IADRS Watermanship Test or testing to a fitness level of 13 MET (Metabolic Equivalents) or greater. Participants with aerobic fitness questions or concerns should consult their physician prior to in-water training.
