Recommended for: All public safety personnel serving as first responders who want to become a department trainer capable of instructing their department members’ in surface ice rescues. The Ice Rescue Specialist certification is recommended, but not required.

Overview

Successful completion of the Ice Rescue Trainer (IRT) program provides the instructor with the skills required to certify their members as Ice Rescue Specialists (as well as Ice Rescue Shore Support Tenders). Instructors will be able to teach their students how to respond to and carry out surface ice rescues, identify ice hazards and formation, select appropriate equipment, conduct victim assessments/medical considerations, in addition to practicing proven rescue methods and techniques. Obtaining the IRT certification allows the instructor to teach the Ice Rescue Specialist program in-house and to mutual aid departments.

Sponsorship by a public safety agency
21 years year of age
Current First Aid, EMT or Paramedic certification
Current CPR certification
Proof of current ice rescue certification (recommended not mandated)

Note To Applicants

This program is designed for personnel who are physically fit. Participants are encouraged to participate after successfully completing the IADRS Watermanship Test or testing to a fitness level of 13 MET (Metabolic Equivalents) or greater. Participants with aerobic fitness questions or concerns should consult their physician prior to in-water training.
