Summer Training Series – Greeley, CO – July 30-August 10, 2024

Dive Rescue International and the Greeley Fire Department have teamed up to present an exceptional training series this summer in Greeley, Colorado. Classes may be taken individually, or as a complete series, and include Med Dive, Dive Rescue 1 Trainer, Dry Suit Diving Trainer, Full Face Mask Trainer, and Dry Suit Repair.

Med Dive – offered July 30-31, 2024, is Dive Rescue International’s renowned 16-hour training program for certified divers, surface support personnel, EMS professionals, and other medical professionals involved with dive teams.

Students learn how to recognize and treat hyperbaric injuries. More importantly, graduates of this program will learn how to prevent injuries and safeguard their teammates. Successful completion of this program is measured in class participation and an end of program comprehensive test.

PREREQUISITES

All students must be a member of a public safety agency, at least 18 years of age, and have current First Aid and CPR training.

The goal of the Dive Rescue 1 Trainer program, offered July 1-5, 2024, is to train and certify individuals to effectively teach department personnel to respond to accident scenes; react to surface and subsurface accidents in a rescue or recovery mode; and prepare surface support personnel to compliment the efforts of the divers. Dive Rescue 1 Trainers not only need to be proficient in the subjects listed below, they also need to successfully complete the following: a final exam, delivery of a lecture on an assigned topic, and demonstrate proficiency in pool and open water diving skills.

BE SURE TO BRING

Be Sure to Bring (for trainer classes): US Coast Guard approved PFD with knife and whistle, adequate clothing and protection from the environment, and pen and paper for note-taking and sketching. Diving students must provide their own equipment: Scuba regulator: recently serviced and environmentally protected with alternate air source (i.e.: octopus, Air II, etc.), timing device, depth and submersible pressure gauges, BC with oral/power inflator, two tanks with current Hydro & VIP, mask, snorkel, fins, weight belt and two cutting tools (knife, wire cutters, or trauma shears).

*All students will be required to wear professional attire during classroom sessions.

August 6-8, 2024, The Dry Suit Diving Trainer (DSDT) will be offered. It is a 24 hour/3 day course designed to extend the knowledge of current Public Safety Scuba Instructors (PSSI) and Dive Rescue I Trainers (DRIT). Successful candidates will return to their department with a complete training system to be used with the Dry Suit Student Kits purchased from Dive Rescue International. This program will allow the DSDT to teach Dry Suit Diving to in-house personnel at a minimal cost.

Topics include teaching adults, evaluating students, cold water physiology, emergency procedures and techniques of dry suit diving, types, styles, features, selection, care, maintenance, and minor repairs, why and how dry suits leak and dive equipment system integration.

PREREQUISITES

All students must be a member of a public safety agency, at least 21 years of age, a current Dive Rescue 1 Trainer or PSSI, and show proof of Dry Suit Diving certification and a minimum of 10 logged dry suit dives. Students must read and complete a RSTC medical statement prior to attending class. Any diver answering yes to any contraindication must have the form signed by a physician.

This program is designed for personnel who are physically fit. Participants are encouraged to participate after successfully completing the IADRS Watermanship Test or testing to a fitness level of 13 MET (Metabolic Equivalents) or greater. Participants with aerobic fitness questions or concerns should consult their physician prior to in-water training.

Successful completion of the Full Face Mask Trainer (FFMT) program – offered August 9, 2024, provides the Instructor with skills required to improve the students’ ability to select, inspect, prepare, don, doff, and safely dive with a full face mask in an open water setting applicable to their jurisdiction. Instructors will be able to explain the purpose and benefits of full face mask diving as well as underwater communications (UWC). Obtaining the FFMT certification allows the Instructor to teach the Full Face Mask program in-house and to mutual aid departments.

Students in the Dry Suit Repair class, offered August 10, 2024 will discuss how to maintain and repair minor tears, punctures, and holes in vulcanized rubber, polyurethane, and trilaminate scuba dry suits. There will be a demonstration of wrist ring, cuff seal, neck seal, and hood installation. Leak testing procedures will also be addressed. Glue and patch materials will be provided for training use during the class.

Course Objectives:

  • Hands on, step by step repair of dry suits commonly used in Public Safety Dive operations
  • Replacement of dry suit hood and neck seal
  • Replacement of wrist cuffs
  • Sealing of punctures using patching materials
  • Chest mounted high pressure inflator valve and shoulder mounted dump valve concerns
  • Trimming seals to fit

Prerequisites: must be 18 years of age.

  • Necessary replacement parts
  • Dremel-type moto tool
  • Dremel #952 tapered grinding stone
